Year 6/7

Welcome to Primary 6 and 7! This term we have been learning all about World War 2. Throughout this topic, we have been having fun as we have studied the countries involved in the Second World War, what impact it had and how people kept themselves safe. Following on from this, we have been designing and building our own Anderson shelters. We have also thoroughly enjoyed looking at a range of pupils’ family artifacts and memorabilia such as letters, diaries, photographs and medals.

Within Numeracy this half term we are learning about:

  • Mixed and irregular fractions
  • Short multiplication
  • Bus stop division
  • Addition and subtraction of decimals
  • Converting different units of measure
  • Time
  • Times tables and mental maths strategies

This term in Literacy, we have loved reading the novel “Goodnight Mr Tom” by Michelle Magorian as it has helped us learn more about what it was like to live through the war. We have also been linking our topic into our writing where we have been creating fact files about World War 2 and planned for and written a personal recount of the Battle of Britain from the viewpoint of the pilot. We have been developing our skills as writers as we have analysed the characters of Mr Tom and William Beech, practiced our narrative and descriptive writing through character analysis and diary writing.

We are also developing our understanding of:

  • Spellings and vocabulary
  • Reading and comprehension skills
  • Grammar and punctuation
