Roots of Empathy

We participate in a program called Roots of Empathy https://rootsofempathy.org/. This award-winning program supports children’s positive mental health and well-being.
Mr Kearney is our Roots of Empathy Instructor who will introduce a class to a baby from our community who will act as a “Tiny Teacher”. The class will get to know the baby through nine monthly visits to their classroom. Over the course of the school year, we will watch the baby grow. The children predict and cheer when their Roots of Empathy baby reaches the ‘developmental milestones’ of the first year: “She can roll over!” “He got his first tooth!” “She can clap hands!” “He can sit up!” “She can wave!” “He can crawl!!”
The children are coached in observing and reading the emotional cues of the baby. Discussions act as a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel. Roots of Empathy is founded on the loving relationship between a parent and baby, which is where empathy starts.
Since Roots of Empathy was founded in 1996, over 1,200,000 children have been learning to respect and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of Empathy baby. Roots of Empathy is a tried, tested and proven effective program that increases children’s kindness, caring, including, sharing and helping behaviours as they develop empathy. Research from three continents shows that as empathy develops, aggression and bullying behaviours are reduced.
This year the participating class is Primary 3/4/5.

Theme 1 - Getting to know baby Sully
He was born on 7/7/24 and is 4 months old. Sully weighs around 10kg and is about 60cm long. He also sleeps really. One interesting fact about him was that he was born at home and his big brother Oakley was the first person to ever hold him!
Theme 2 - Crying
For theme 2 we explored crying and discussed that this is linked to our temperaments. Baby Sully does not cry too much but does cry when he is in the car. In this visit we noticed that he has much more hair and that his neck is stronger with him looking around at us all a lot more.
Theme 3 - Caring and Planning for baby
In this theme we explored all the things that baby Sully needs for his changing bag - his mum is super organised!
We also saw how much he has grown since the last visit with his neck being much stronger now. He loved us singing Christmas songs to him and Sully was so excited to open his Christmas present, he even tasted it!
Theme 4 - Emotions
Baby Sully has 2 grown lots since we last saw him and now has two teeth. He is also nearly crawling and his hands have really opened up to grab things! We discussed that all emotions are ok and when Sully left P3-5 thought of excellent synonyms for HAPPY/SAD/ANGRY/CONTENT.
Theme 5 - Safety
Pupils participated brilliantly in discussing how to keep babies safe, in particular around the house. They also explored how to keep babies safe while in their mum's tummy.
Baby Sully is nearly cutting his 3rd tooth, has really grown - weighing 2 stone and is nearly crawling! The boys and girls also loved performing a rendition of his favourite song 'Baby Shark' which was received with enthusiastic bobbing and smiles.
Theme 6 - Communication
This theme was all about how we communicate and we explored how words aren't always necessary - 'pictures can paint a thousand words'. Baby Sully has grown again and is getting stronger on his legs - it won't be long until he's walking. He not speaking just yet but can manage 'da da' from time to time. However as we sang to him and played peek-a-boo he communicated very clearly that he was having a ball.
